Calcium is important for kids
The body's most abundant mineral. Its primary function is to help build and maintain bones, joints and teeth. Calcium is also important for a healthy heart, nerves, muscles and skin. Calcium helps control blood acid-alkaline balance, plays a role in cell division, muscle growth and iron utilization, activates certain enzymes, and helps transport nutrients through cell membranes. Calcium also forms a cellular cement called ground substance that helps hold cells and tissues together.
Deficiency Symptoms
Insufficient calcium intake, poor calcium absorption, and/or excessive calcium losses through the urine and feces can cause calcium deficiency. In children, calcium deficiency can cause improper bone mineralization, which leads to rickets, a condition characterized by bone deformities and growth retardation.
Low levels of calcium in the blood (especially one particular form of calcium, called free ionized calcium) may cause a condition called tetany, in which nerve activity becomes excessive. Symptoms of tetany include muscle pain and spasms, as well as tingling and/or numbness in the hands and feet.
Kid's Calcium is vital during the formative years as bones grow and harden. It is one of the most abundant minerals in the body, making up nearly 2% of total body weight. While calcium is found mostly in the bones, it has equally vital roles in other parts of the body. Many enzymes that control body processes depend on calcium in order to work properly, as do the nerves, heart, and blood-clotting mechanisms.
Some symptoms associated with Calcium Deficiency
• Pain in the bones and joints of Arms, Legs, Spine, Pelvis.
• Skeletal deformities including Bow legs, Forward projection of the breastbone (pigeon chest or pectus carinatum), Funnel chest (pectus excavatum), "Bumps" in the rib cage (rachitic rosary) and Asymmetrical or odd-shaped skull.
• Spine deformities (spine curves abnormally, including scoliosis or kyphosis).
• Pelvic deformities.
• Increased tendency toward bone fractures.
• Dental deformities.
• Delayed formation of teeth.
• Defects in the structure of teeth, holes in the enamel.
• Increased incidence of cavities in the teeth (dental caries).
• Progressive weakness.
• Decreased muscle tone (loss of muscle strength).
• Muscle cramps.
• Impaired growth.
• Short stature (adults less than 5 feet tall).
• Fever or restlessness, especially at night.
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Of the body's total calcium, about 99% is in the bones and teeth where it plays a structural role. The remaining 1% is present in body tissues and fluids where it is essential for cell metabolism, muscle contraction and nerve impulse transmission.
